Giovanni, conegut com Vanni, Gattarelli fou un noble (cavaller) de Pisa. En el context del conflicte entre güelfs i gibel·lins, s'exilià a la Corona d'Aragó, on fou nomenat domèstic o familiar reial per Jaume II el Just (1267 – 1327). Serví el rei com a ambaixador davant de diverses repúbliques itàliques per a preparar la conquesta de Sardenya, dominada per Pisa. Participà a la campanya d'Almeria de 1309-1310, on caigué greument malalt i obtingué una llicència i un elevat donatiu del rei per retornar als seus dominis catalans. — Formes antigues del nom: «Vannus Gatarelli», «Vannus de Ghactarellis» (llatí), «Vanni Gatarelli» (català).

The small images on the decorative ribbon correspond, from left to right, to the following documents: 1. James II orders the settlement of neighborhood disputes over an estate of the royal doctor Arnau de Vilanova in the city of Valencia. 1298 (ACA); 2. Contract between Guglielmo Neri de Santo Martino, a surgeon from Pisa, and the physician-surgeon from Majorca Pere Saflor, bachelor of medicine, to practise medicine and surgery under the latter’s direction, 1356 (ACM); 3.
