Comte d'Anjou, de Maine i de Turena (1129-1151), pretendent a la corona d'Anglaterra des del seu casament amb Matilde d'Anglaterra (1128). Per fer valdre els drets de la seva esposa i els seus, va conquistar el ducat de Normandia, annex a la corona anglesa (1144), que més tard va cedir (1149, decisió ratificada pel rei de França el 1150) al seu hereu, Enric II d'Anglaterra (1133 – 1189). Va rebre Guillem de Conches (c. 1080/1090 – post 1154) a la seva cort i el va fer tutor dels seus fills, Enric, Jofré i Guillem. Anomenat Plantagenet pel costum de dur un ram de ginesta al capell.
