The commemorations of the bicentenary of the emancipation of the American Republics are anopportunity to study a protagonist from the earliest times of colonisation, Diego Álvarez Chanca, the first doctor in America. Traditional historiography has focused on his famous letter but little on the key characteristics of his interesting biography. In this paper a comprehensive biography of Doctor Chanca has been carried out, underlining some of the aspects which have not been given attention formerly, clarifying others that are false or uncertain and emphasizing yet another that has become something of a historical enigma.
